Uninsured X-Ray & Imaging Services in Toronto: Costs and What to Expect

Most diagnostic imaging exams in Ontario are fully covered by OHIP when a physician, chiropractor, midwife, or nurse practitioner refers you. A small number of exams fall outside OHIP’s coverage rules and come with a fee. Here is what those exams are, what they cost at Annex Medical Imaging, and why they are not covered.

What OHIP Does and Does Not Cover

OHIP generally covers X-rays, ultrasounds, mammograms, and bone density (BMD) tests when they are medically necessary and requested by an eligible healthcare provider. A handful of specific exams are excluded from OHIP funding because they are not considered medically necessary under the province’s rules, even though you may still need them for other reasons, such as an immigration application.

Uninsured Exams and Fees at Annex Medical Imaging

The following exams are not covered by OHIP and require payment at the time of your visit:

• Sinus X-ray (billing code X008): $60.00
• Chest X-ray for immigration purposes (billing code X090): $60.00
• Consultation report for chiropractic exams (billing code A335): $15.00
• High-risk bone densitometry within 1 year of your last exam (billing code X155): $200.00

If you need one of these exams, you will be asked to sign a consent form agreeing to the fee before we proceed.

Why Immigration Medical Exams Need an Uninsured Chest X-Ray

Chest X-rays required for immigration, permanent residency, or work and study permit applications are billed separately from OHIP because they satisfy a federal immigration requirement rather than diagnose or treat a medical condition. This is true even if you have a valid Ontario Health Card. Bring your immigration medical exam paperwork with you so we can process the X-ray correctly for your application.

Repeat Bone Density Tests Within a Year

OHIP covers bone mineral density testing on a set schedule based on your risk category. If you need a high-risk repeat BMD test sooner than OHIP’s funding rules allow, that repeat test is billed directly to you rather than to OHIP.
